Back in 1996, a fantastic superhero film that wasn’t Marvel or DC was released starring the great Billy Zane. Sure, one year later he would play a dashing villain in the hugely successful Titanic, but for this, he played the dashing hero in The Phantom.
(more…)I’m a huge fan of Supernatural if it wasn’t already glaringly obvious. So naturally I follow creator Eric Kripke’s work. Which led me to The Boys at Comic-Con way back when at their first panel. I never read the comics, but it’s Kripke! I knew I was going to watch. At this point, it would be surprising if you didn’t know or haven’t seen The Boys.

(more…)Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse brought us a version of the noir version of Spider-Man from the comics, but this time portrayed as the version of Ben Reilly instead of Peter Parker (that’s a whole other thing). And with “noir” being one word to describe the character, it already tells you exactly what to expect.

Sure, season 2 of Peacemaker is upon us this week, but it’s always a good time to bring up the opening of the show. Season 2 brought along with it a new theme song in “Oh Lord” by Foxy Shazam. And yes, it’s because of this that I brought up the band not too long ago.

One of my first memories as a child being introduced to comic books was a figure with a fiery skull and a motorcycle on fire. It was so different and scary and it grabbed my attention. I wanted to know more about Ghost Rider. I bought the Marvel character cards at the comic book shop just to have his card. And then I dove into the comics. I always leaned into horror when it comes to comics, novels, movies — you get the picture. They scared me, but I just kept coming back.

Marvel Studios went through a gradual shift from character arcs to spectacle. What started as tongue-in-cheek jokes about secrets became a legitimate obsession. Their focus became wanting to surprise audiences.

Admittedly, I was a little worried about the third Deadpool film. I thought I wouldn’t enjoy the story, or how it brought Hugh Jackman back to the role of Wolverine. Logan was an incredible sendoff and goodbye to Jackman’s 20-plus year portrayal of the character. Turns out I was pretty wrong being concerned.
