  • Mark Ruffalo Playing the Hulk in The Avengers

In the TV show and the movies the actors who played Bruce Banner never actually got the chance to also play the Hulk. Mark Ruffalo, who has been cast as Bruce Banner in The Avengers recently stated that he won’t just be playing the role of Bruce Banner, but also the Hulk.

“They’re going to do the Avatar stop-action, stop-motion capture. So I’ll actually play the Hulk. That’ll be fun.”

    -Mark Ruffalo

It means that instead of the usual all CG Hulk, Ruffalo will be fitted for motion capturing and play the role of the Hulk on set. It’ll be the first time that it’ll be done like that for the character, and it will be sure to make a world of a difference for the interactions with other actors.

On the part of Bruce Banner, Ruffalo intends to draw from Bill Bixby’s version of Banner. He wants Banner to be sympathetic, while the Hulk rages and destroys all in his path.

I was hesitant about Mark Ruffalo being cast in The Avengers, but his attitude towards the role has been winning me over. So far Marvel has been having brilliant casting. He was great in Shutter Island, and he’ll be sure to bring that drive to the role of the Hulk as well.

  • Stephen Fry in Sherlock Holmes 2

Earlier this month I wrote about some news and rumors on the sequel of Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes; news that Sherlock’s older brother Mycroft Holmes will be making an appearance. And somehow I did not see this coming; yet it makes so much sense. The brilliant actor Stephen Fry has been cast in the role of Mycroft Holmes.

Stephen Fry is intelligent, comedic, and has class. What else is there to say? It’s perfect casting. Absolutely perfect.

  • Iron Man 2: The Hangover Edition

An alternate opening for Iron Man 2 has made rounds. The difference? It begins with sounds of Tony Stark vomiting followed by showing him on his knees in the Iron Man suit clutching a toilet. He’s clearly hungover while Pepper is scolding him and keeping him on task. A moment later his egotism wins over and he makes the drop to the Stark Expo.

This really should have been the opening for the film. It sets the tone. Tony Stark is an arrogant mess. Pepper is all business. It’s their dynamic. And let’s face it: Every Iron Man film should open and close with a hungover Tony Stark. It’s evident that Tony’s superpower is overcoming hangovers.

  • Guillermo del Toro Wants Ron Perlman in Lovecraft Film

In August I wrote a post on Guillermo del Toro’s screenplay adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft’s At the Mountains of Madness. And del Toro looks to be in the director seat with James Cameron as producer. How exciting is that?

In a recent interview Guillermo del Toro said that he’s written a role specifically for actor Ron Perlman (Hellboy/Sons of Anarchy). All that it will take is for Perlman’s schedule to be free and he’s in.

“Ron Perlman has a role in it written specifically for him. Ron plays Larson, the sort of dog guy, the guy that cares for the dogs and the sled. … It’s a fantastic character. I really love him. He’s sort of a pragmatic guy, doesn’t care about science or the mythology or the cosmology. He just is a hard-boiled Nordic man.”

    -Guillermo del Toro

I really want it to happen. Ron Perlman is a good actor and I really enjoyed his work on both Hellboy films. He would be no stranger to a film inspired by Lovecraft. He’d be a great fit.

Do yourself a favor and watch both Hellboy films (Hellboy/Hellboy 2: The Golden Army) for del Toro’s and Perlman’s work together. Then watch del Toro’s Pan’s Labyrinth. You know you want to.

Guillermo del Toro and James Cameron together on a film adaptation of a H.P. Lovecraft horror novel? And the possibility of Ron Perlman’s involvement? I’m in. All in.

  • Uwe Boll Documentary: Raging Boll

A documentary is coming out this year on the infamous director Uwe Boll; the film is entitled Raging Boll. And yes, it’ll be about his life on and off set. It’s directed by Dan Lee West.

Interesting enough, Dan Lee West was a crew member on a couple of Uwe Boll’s movies while filming the documentary.

Despite the unanimous dislike for the director, I’m very interested in seeing Raging Boll. His genuine belief that he shoots well-made films will be a riveting delusion to witness. And his delusion runs deep enough that he challenged five critics to a boxing match in 2006 — which was unfair due to him being a former amateur boxer. But why issue the challenge? Because pummeling them proved he’s a good director. At least that’s what he thinks. Footage from the boxing matches will make the cut in the documentary.

Uwe Boll’s past backlash towards his critics reminds me of M. Night Shyamalan’s recent hateful remarks towards his own. Both directors have earned themselves bad reputations. And they clearly need to have a boxing match to decide the most delusional director.

    Sorry for the tangent.

The documentary Raging Boll will premiere this year at the Austin Film Festival in Texas. I impatiently await a nationwide release on DVD.

  • Hellraiser Gets New Pinhead

Actor Doug Bradley who has played the part of Pinhead in all the past Hellraiser films has decided not to reprise the role in the next installment entitled Hellraiser: Revelations. Now in the role will be relatively unknown Stephan Smith Collins.

Others question if Stephan Smith Collins will bring the same demeanor that Doug Bradley did to Pinhead. Bradley portrayed Pinhead as articulate and not as your typical, cliche horror monster. Only time will tell if Collins does the same for Pinhead.

The screenplay is written by Gary J. Tunnicliffe. In the lead roles will be Nick Eversham and Jay Gillespie as Steve and Nico. The premise deals with Steve and Nico backpacking in Mexico and discovering the Pandora puzzle box. A new character named “Pseudo Pinhead” will play a key role in the new film, who is a faithful servant of the real Pinhead.

Directed by Victor Garcia, Hellraiser: Revelations will be released in the U.S. on DTV next year by Dimension Films.

What can I say? I have a soft spot for horror films.

  • Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan Gets New Film

The screenwriter for Sherlock Holmes Anthony Peckham has been hired to script Paramount’s spy thriller for Jack Ryan; a character written by author Tom Clancy.

Jack Ryan first served as a platoon commander whose military career ended prematurely when his platoon’s helicopter crashed over a Greek Island during a NATO exercise. After a long recovery process and leading a civilian life, Ryan joined the CIA.

Portraying Jack Ryan will be actor Chris Pine, who I consider a good fit for the character. He has a strong presence as James T. Kirk in Star Trek, which gives him credence for the part of Jack Ryan.

The film’s premise will revolve around Jack Ryan’s early career set in Russia. It’s still unclear if it’ll be a faithful adaptation to the novels, or if the novels will simply serve as sources. Either way, Anthony Peckham is making a name for himself with studios. It’ll be interesting to see where this will go.
