  • Iron Man 3 Finds its Director in Shane Black

Jon Favreau has stepped down from directing Iron Man 3 to sprearhead Disney’s Magic Kingdom film. So who’s going to wield Robert Downey Jr’s witty charm? Writer and director Shane Black has taken over the director seat for Marvel Studios’ Iron Man 3.

Black and Downey are no strangers to each other — Black co-write and directed the movie Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, which helped restart Downey’s acting career. And let’s face it: the snappy and witty dialogue in that film is a perfect fit for the persona of Tony Stark.

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang was a thoroughly entertaining film, though it hasn’t showcased the grand action scenes that Iron Man will call for. But who knows? Marvel Studios has been taking chances since the first Iron Man, and they have yet to disappoint.

Robert Downey Jr. is the embodiment of Tony Stark, but if Marvel Studios lets Shane Black co-write as well, then Iron Man 3 has a huge chance to topple over the first film.

  • Cobie Smulders to Portray Maria Hill in The Avengers

Marvel Studio’s recent casting has come to a close with actress Cobie Smulders (How I Met Your Mother) selected to portray Maria Hill in The Avengers.

Maria Hill’s place in The Avengers? She’s the executive director of SHIELD; and in the film she will be Nick Fury’s (Samuel L. Jackson) right-hand woman. Coupled with a fighting prowess, Hill is an apt negotiator.

Cobie Smulders’ role involves a nine-picture option, so it’s clear that Maria Hill will be in other Marvel films.

The Avengers directed by Joss Whedon begins shooting in late April.

  • More Photos and News on Captain America: The First Avenger

New images from Captain America: The First Avenger hit online — also giving us a first look at Captain America’s sidekick James “Bucky” Barnes, portrayed by Sebastian Stan.

On top of the photos, Chris Evans cleared up the rumor on how many films he’s signed up for:

    “To be honest it was quite intimidating and scary to commit to nine films in a row. God thank you, we reduced the number to six [fusion_builder_container hundred_percent=”yes” overflow=”visible”][fusion_builder_row][fusion_builder_column type=”1_1″ background_position=”left top” background_color=”” border_size=”” border_color=”” border_style=”solid” spacing=”yes” background_image=”” background_repeat=”no-repeat” padding=”” margin_top=”0px” margin_bottom=”0px” class=”” id=”” animation_type=”” animation_speed=”0.3″ animation_direction=”left” hide_on_mobile=”no” center_content=”no” min_height=”none”][3 Captain America, 3 Avengers] … If all goes as planned, I embody Captain America until I am 40-years-old.”

    — Chris Evans

Six movies is still a hell of a lot to sign on for, and Evans put things in perspective mentioning the age he would be at, at the end of his tenure as Captain America.

The first trailer for Captain America: The First Avenger will debut on TV this Super Bowl Sunday — so keep your eyes open.

  • Marvel’s Black Panther Film Back on Track

Marvel’s superhero Black Panther is back on track being developed as a film. And frankly, it’s about time since studios have been trying to adapt Black Panther as a movie since the 90s.

Curiously enough, Mark Bailey will write the screenplay. Bailey is known as a writer and story editor for various documentaries. But who knows? He just might be a perfect fit after all.

Kevin Feige of Marvel Studios will produce.

So who is Black Panther? The name itself is the ceremonial title bestowed upon the chief of the Panther tribe in the fictional African nation Wakanda. The main Black Panther in the Marvel universe? His name is T’Challa, the leader of the various tribes of the nation and defender of the people. Becoming Black Panther, T’Challa, with his connection with the Wakandan Panther god, consumed a special herb which granted him greatly enhanced senses, strength, speed, agility, and stamina.

The Black Panther character was created in 1966 and is considered the first mainstream black superhero.

It’s good timing for the Black Panther film with the Avengers flick on the horizon, especially since Black Panther eventually becomes an Avenger himself.

  • New Captain America Photos Released

Entertainment Weekly released photos from Captain America: The First Avenger. I’m digging the costume. And seeing the original shield was an awesome surprise.

  • Photos of Captain America Costume

I’ve been pumped for Captain America: The First Avenger ever since Chris Evans was announced as the title character. The panel for it at Comic-Con only made the anticipation grow. And now, some photos have been released showing a stuntman in the Captain America costume. And I must say, the costume looks awesome.

  • Comic-Con: Captain America

The panel for Captain America: The First Avenger brought out director Joe Johnston, and actors Chris Evans and Hugo Weaving. Johnston went on to explain that they only began filming five days ago, but they really wanted to share footage with us. He cued the clip and World War II propaganda footage played superimposed on Captain America’s shield. As it ended, it showed Chris Evans in the costume turning towards the camera — the audience went crazy. The title showed, then we suddenly see Captain America throwing his shield at the camera — thunderous applause from the crowd.

What we saw was a costume test, but from our reactions, they’re very much on track with its direction.

Chris Evans wasn’t shy about talking about some people’s apprehension about him portraying Captain America, but he believes that if the movie is good, people will be accepting of him. Evans feels the pressure, but he’s trying not to think about how big the scope is due to the character being one of the biggest names in Marvel Comics — saying he might have a panic attack if he thinks about it too much. He went on to say that he really likes the costume and hopes to do the character justice.

Hugo Weaving refused to do his German accent, but did inform the audience that he’s been working with the Red Skull mask. It’s a series of lightweight pieces on his face, enabling him to convey emotions — though in V for Vendetta he’s proven that he doesn’t need his facial expressions to emote.

The president of Marvel Studios Kevin Feige wanted to show us rough footage despite it still having the time-stamp on it. It begins with Hugo Weaving as Johann Schmidt (before he becomes Red Skull) leading a group of Nazi soldiers to open a sarcophagus, looking for something that belonged to Odin. The jewel in the sarcophagus ends up being a fake, but it doesn’t affect Schmidt who quickly finds it in a secret compartment on a wall.

The feel of the footage felt a lot like Indiana Jones, which is exciting to me. After all, the movie does entirely take place during World War II, and it’s a perfect fit. Hugo Weaving is very effective as the antagonist with a demanding screen presence. And the footage we were shown was already tying in with Thor, furthering the universe Marvel Studios is creating with their films. The audience went crazy for it. It’s a highly anticipated film and one of the landmarks for Comic-Con this year.

  • Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye in “The Avengers”

Jeremy Renner from the Hurt Locker is the latest actor in talks with Marvel Studios to join the cast of the Avengers. He would be casted as the hero Hawkeye.

Hawkeye is the alias of Clint Barton, who was an orphan who ran away and joined circus. He was trained how to use the bow and arrow under the tutelage of the Swordsman and Trickshot until finding out that they’re criminals; leading to a violent falling out. Later, Clint is inspired by Iron Man to become a hero and became Hawkeye. Unfortunately he’s quickly mistaken of being a thief.

On the run he meets and falls in love with the Soviet spy Black Widow. She tricks him into helping her try to procure Stark technology, which leads to several battles with Iron Man. Hawkeye is then convinced to go straight by breaking into the Avengers’ mansion to “apply” as a member. He becomes an Avenger and receives extensive training from Captain America.

There will definitely be changes to his background for the movie since a big part of his past involves Black Widow, whose character was changed to be an agent of SHIELD in Iron Man 2. I’m glad that Marvel Studios will be bringing in other Avengers, and not just the big four who have their own films.
