• Uwe Boll Documentary: Raging Boll

A documentary is coming out this year on the infamous director Uwe Boll; the film is entitled Raging Boll. And yes, it’ll be about his life on and off set. It’s directed by Dan Lee West.

Interesting enough, Dan Lee West was a crew member on a couple of Uwe Boll’s movies while filming the documentary.

Despite the unanimous dislike for the director, I’m very interested in seeing Raging Boll. His genuine belief that he shoots well-made films will be a riveting delusion to witness. And his delusion runs deep enough that he challenged five critics to a boxing match in 2006 — which was unfair due to him being a former amateur boxer. But why issue the challenge? Because pummeling them proved he’s a good director. At least that’s what he thinks. Footage from the boxing matches will make the cut in the documentary.

Uwe Boll’s past backlash towards his critics reminds me of M. Night Shyamalan’s recent hateful remarks towards his own. Both directors have earned themselves bad reputations. And they clearly need to have a boxing match to decide the most delusional director.

    Sorry for the tangent.

The documentary Raging Boll will premiere this year at the Austin Film Festival in Texas. I impatiently await a nationwide release on DVD.

  • Hellraiser Gets New Pinhead

Actor Doug Bradley who has played the part of Pinhead in all the past Hellraiser films has decided not to reprise the role in the next installment entitled Hellraiser: Revelations. Now in the role will be relatively unknown Stephan Smith Collins.

Others question if Stephan Smith Collins will bring the same demeanor that Doug Bradley did to Pinhead. Bradley portrayed Pinhead as articulate and not as your typical, cliche horror monster. Only time will tell if Collins does the same for Pinhead.

The screenplay is written by Gary J. Tunnicliffe. In the lead roles will be Nick Eversham and Jay Gillespie as Steve and Nico. The premise deals with Steve and Nico backpacking in Mexico and discovering the Pandora puzzle box. A new character named “Pseudo Pinhead” will play a key role in the new film, who is a faithful servant of the real Pinhead.

Directed by Victor Garcia, Hellraiser: Revelations will be released in the U.S. on DTV next year by Dimension Films.

What can I say? I have a soft spot for horror films.

  • Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan Gets New Film

The screenwriter for Sherlock Holmes Anthony Peckham has been hired to script Paramount’s spy thriller for Jack Ryan; a character written by author Tom Clancy.

Jack Ryan first served as a platoon commander whose military career ended prematurely when his platoon’s helicopter crashed over a Greek Island during a NATO exercise. After a long recovery process and leading a civilian life, Ryan joined the CIA.

Portraying Jack Ryan will be actor Chris Pine, who I consider a good fit for the character. He has a strong presence as James T. Kirk in Star Trek, which gives him credence for the part of Jack Ryan.

The film’s premise will revolve around Jack Ryan’s early career set in Russia. It’s still unclear if it’ll be a faithful adaptation to the novels, or if the novels will simply serve as sources. Either way, Anthony Peckham is making a name for himself with studios. It’ll be interesting to see where this will go.

  • Sacha Baron Cohen in Queen’s Freddie Mercury Biopic

GK Films, Tribeca Productions, and Queen Films have combined efforts to film a biopic on the front man of Queen, Freddie Mercury. Peter Morgan is penning the screenplay which will focus on the formation of the band to Queen’s 1985 appearance at Live Aid. Not too surprisingly, Sacha Baron Cohen has been cast to play Freddie Mercury.

The biopic has secured the rights to a catalog of Queen’s songs, although, it’s not clear if Baron Cohen will be singing or if they’ll use Mercury’s vocals. Yes, Baron Cohen is capable of singing, but Mercury’s singing is hard to match. He was unique. Nevertheless, Sacha Baron Cohen looks remarkably like Freddie Mercury, and he does have acting chops.

“Queen is one of the greatest rock bands of all time, and a music brand all unto itself. Freddie Mercury was an awe-inspiring performer, so with Sacha in the starring role coupled with Peter’s screenplay and the support of Queen, we have the perfect combination to tell the real story behind their success.”

    -Graham King of GK Films

Roger Taylor, Brian May, and John Deacon of Queen gave the okay for the licensing and music publishing rights for the first time for a movie about the band — and went as far as creating Queen Films to become a part of the production team. It’s strongly evident that they have faith in the film project. I’m entirely looking forward to the Freddie Mercury biopic.

  • Voltron Making a Return

Screenwriters Thomas Donelly and Joshua Oppenheimer have been taking on film projects that would make geeks like me happy — they scribed the upcoming Conan movie and are currently penning the adaptation for Marvel’s Dr. Strange. Recently they have been hired by Atlas Entertainment to write the script for the big screen adaptation of Voltron.

A lot of us remember Voltron being a cartoon from the 80s about a group of five men who pilot five lion robots that combine to form  Voltron. Together known as the Voltron Force, the group protected the planet Arus from King Zarkon and his ilk. Full of nostalgia yet?

Concept art for Voltron has recently been released. And it’s looking incredibly badass. Let’s hope they don’t film the action scenes like Transformers. Pull back the shot; let the audience see their massive scale.

It’s hard to be pessimistic about this project. It has potential. The kid in me is excited. We’ll see how it pans out for Atlas Entertainment.

  • Columbia Has Hopes for Goosebumps

Remember R.L. Stine’s Goosebumps book series from the early 90s? All the children’s horror novels that drew you in? How some of the stories eventually got the TV treatment — The Haunted Mask comes to mind. Well, Columbia will adapt Goosebumps into a feature film. And they’re hoping it will have potential to become a franchise. The screenwriter for Disturbia Carl Ellsworth is attached to pen the screenplay. There’s no word yet on which story will be translated to film, but it’ll be sure to be nostalgic for a lot of moviegoers.

  • Update on Deadpool Film

Escaping from the train wreck known as X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Deadpool will have his own film starring Ryan Reynolds. As I mentioned before, the screenwriters of Zombieland Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese have penned the screenplay. These three alone posses a lot of potential for the Deadpool adaptation, and it’s rather exciting.

Then there’s 20th Century Fox still in talks with Robert Rodriguez; wanting him in the director seat. And who could blame them? He would be an excellent fit for the movie.

Ryan Reynolds recently discussed the Deadpool character and the direction of the film:

“It goes in such a different direction than a superhero movie usually goes. It’s a nasty piece of work. It’s just based in so much emotional filth, completely. It’s like Barfly if it were a superhero movie. It sort of treads into the world of an emotionally damaged person.  I always say that Deadpool is a guy in a highly militarized shame spiral…. It’s so different than the superhero movies to date, it departs so far from that.”

    -Ryan Reynolds

He went on to say that the events that took place in Wolverine won’t affect the Deadpool film in any way, and confirmed that Wade Wilson (Deadpool) will break the fourth wall and talk to the audience. He’s described as a deranged Ferris Bueller armed with katana swords.

Reynolds addressed the inconsistency in the writing for the comics of Deadpool, but that the core of the character remains intact. Wade Wilson’s moral flexibility is an important aspect that will remain; as will his witticisms. After all, he’s “the merc with a mouth”.

Ryan Reynolds’ devotion to both Green Lantern and Deadpool — and wanting to get them right — is certainly earning him cred with comic book fans. He’s a perfect fit for Deadpool, and the fact that he understands the character only makes it more enthralling.
