• Andrew Garfield Reacts to Spider-Man Role

    For a while I’ve been a supporter of Logan Lerman for the part of Spider-Man for the rebooted franchise. I was admittedly disappointed that Andrew Garfield got the role instead of Lerman, but after what Garfield said about the part, I’ve become excited.

    “I have been waiting for this phone call for 24 years, for someone to call me up and say, ‘Hey, we want you to pretend to be a character that you’ve always wanted to be all your life, and we’re going to do it with cool cameras and cool effects and you’re going to feel like you’re swinging through New York City. Do you want to do that?’ ‘Let me just consult with my seven-year old self and see what he thinks . . .

    Like every young boy who feels stronger on the inside than they look on the outside, any skinny boy basically who wishes their muscles matched their sense of injustice, God, it’s just the stuff that dreams are made of, for sure. It’s a true f***ing honor to be part of this symbol that I actually think is a very important symbol and it’s meant a great deal to me, and it continues to mean something to people.”

    He’s definitely a good actor . . . and what else is there to say? His statement about getting the part is very enthusiastic.  Hopefully he always brings that to the role. He just might make me a convert after all.

  • Alien Prequel Penned by Damon Lindoff

    A two-part Alien prequel is in the works from Ridley Scott; co-creator of Lost Damon Lindoff is penning the screenplay. And apparently casting is not far off.

    The prequel will be about the origin of the xenomorphs (aliens), which has the possibility to be intriguing and terrorizing — or bland and ruining their appeal. I’d lean towards the former considering the creative forces behind it at work.

    “The film will be really tough, really nasty. It’s the dark side of the moon. We are talking about gods and engineers. Engineers of space. And were the aliens designed as a form of biological warfare? Or biology that would go in and clean up a planet?”

    Personally I’m hoping that it’s an “act of god”, where it’s simply biology’s way to clean up a planet. The xenomorphs being a man-made biological weapon would cheapen it.

  • Tom Hardy in Mad Max Reboot

    Mad Max: Fury Road has been confirmed to be a reboot rather than a sequel of the Mad Max films. It’ll be starring Tom Hardy, whose most recent role was “the Forger” Eames in Inception. Hardy stated that the new film will be a retake on the story; an updated version.

    Luckily Tom Hardy went on to put people at ease who fear the new Mad Max film being overloaded with CG, telling Collider:

    “These things are going to be really there. Big rigs, big explosions, big car crashes. Big violence, you know. It’s going to actually happen as opposed to doing a 2D turned to 3D screen. It’s going to be an adventure, let’s put it that way. We’re shooting for a year.”

    Tom Hardy certainly has the acting chops to carry Mad Max forward, and the fact that practical effects will be involved is a plus. I was pessimistic until his name was attached, and also with the fact that George Miller of the original film will helm Mad Max: Fury Road. It’s exciting.

  • Neil Gaiman’s Sandman Being Adapted

    Neil Gaiman’s Sandman will be adapted into a TV series. Interestingly enough, the creator of Supernatural, Eric Kripke is rumored to be the showrunner. He’d actually be a perfect fit for the new series — his own show being a testament to that.

    Sandman is a comic book written in 1989 about a character named Dream and his brothers and sisters — who are all essentially allegories. And the story deals with worlds-within-worlds.

    The adaptation has a lot of potential, and it would be a smart move to put Eric Kripke at the helm.

  • Battlestar Galactica Exhibit

    The Experience Music Project|Science Fiction Museum in Seattle, Washington, is opening a new exhibit: Battlestar Galactica: The Exhibition. It’ll feature props, costumes, and music from the original series and the re-imagined series. On top of that, it’ll also feature three full-size spaceships. It will open to the public on October 23, 2010 to March 4, 2012.

    Saying that I think it’s awesome that Battlestar has an exhibit is an understatement. If anything, it inspires me to get a group together for a road trip to see it.

  • NBC’s Magic Drama from Ronald D. Moore

    The man behind the re-imagining of Glen A. Larson’s Battlestar Galactica, Ronald D. Moore has signed a deal with NBC for a new drama series where magic is the norm. It’s been described as an adult Harry Potter. Apparently the pilot and series penalties totaled around $2 million.

    Moore has an excellent track record with the shows he’s worked on. Battlestar Galactica is still viewed as one of the top series on television, and Moore also had a hand in HBO’s Carnivale, which is highly regarded. It’ll be exciting to see how his new project pans out.

  • Ryan Reynolds in Buried

    Ryan Reynolds stars in the film “Buried”, about a civilian who is a truck driver in Iraq who’s kidnapped by terrorists and buried. In a coffin, Reynolds only has a dying cellphone that he tries to use to get help. He eventually finds out that the terrorists are holding him for ransom. It becomes a race against time to be rescued before he runs out of air.

    The fact that it entirely takes place in a coffin is an interesting premise; Reynolds was dedicated to the role and didn’t have any reservations about being thrown in the coffin right off the bat and begin filming. He considers it one of the hardest roles he had to play.

    Film festival Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas is holding a contest where four winners will get the chance to watch the entire film inside a coffin. It’s a unique idea and it’d definitely add to the tone of the movie while the contestants watch. The festival takes place on September 18th.

  • Lovecraft Novella At the Mountains of Madness is Adapted

    Horror author H.P. Lovecraft’s novella At the Mountains of Madness has received the screenplay treatment by Guillermo del Toro; James Cameron is attached to produce the film adaptation.

    The setting is set as a period piece in the 1930s; the premise dealing with scientists traveling to Antarctica and resurrecting primeval monsters. Then horror and destruction soon occurs.

    “It’s going to be an epically scaled horror film, and we haven’t seen anything like that in a really long time — I guess since Aliens.” He went on to say that “The thing about Lovecraft is he left a lot to the imagination. He never told you what they looked like. He managed to create a sense of creeping horror without specifics.”

    It’s an exciting collaboration. Guillermo del Toro directed Pan’s Labyrinth which shows a vision that could fit with a Lovecraft story. James Cameron, of course, is an excellent filmmaker whose Aliens and The Abyss have a sense of horror and wonder that would also fit the mood of Lovecraft.

    Though, I do have to say that I disagree with Cameron’s comment about Lovecraft leaving a lot to the imagination — Lovecraft was obsessive with detail.

    I’m entirely looking forward to the film adaptation of At the Mountains of Madness. And I’m hoping that it will be in black and white. It’d add a surreality to the movie. It would definitely fit in a Lovecraft adaptation.
