  • Guillermo del Toro’s At the Mountains of Madness Shelved

Director Guillermo del Toro’s adaptation of Lovecraft’s At the Mountains of Madness has ceased production. It’s a huge disappointment since it was del Toro’s dream project, Tom Cruise was interested in a role — and not to mention James Cameron’s involvement as well. Apparently Universal couldn’t invest in a $150 million R rated movie. The risk was too great.

Guillermo del Toro hopes Universal will allow his production to move to another studio, but for the time being, At the Mountains of Madness is in a stalemate. del Toro went on to say that it was simply a business decision by Universal.

  • Director Shane Black on Iron Man 3

Iron Man 3 director Shane Black will also write the screenplay for the movie. And apparently Robert Downey Jr. will contribute to the story as well. Seems fine to me since Downey has great interest in the character and was repeatedly seen buying Iron Man and Avengers comic books.

The studio was displeased with Iron Man 2 being a “two men in iron suits fighting each other”, and, according to Black, the third film would feel more like a Tom Clancy thriller. If any superhero makes a perfect fit for a Tom Clancy thriller, it’d be Iron Man — and it’s hard not to put trust in Shane Black after his work on Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.

Supposedly Marvel Studios’ plan for their films is to let each movie focus on its own superhero after the Avengers hits. A shared universe is a hell of an endeavor, but the idea of containing crossovers in specific films will keep them special; keep them as a big deal. Though, there’s nothing wrong with the occasional cameo or reference of other superheroes and villains.

  • Battlestar Alums Join Ron Moore’s 17th Precinct

Executive producer Ron Moore has moved on from the Battlestar Galactica mythos to create the series 17th Precinct. The premise deals with supernatural elements and magic in a fictional town known as Excelsior.

Following Moore from Battlestar to 17th Precinct are actors Jamie Bamber (Lee Adama) and James Callis (Gaius Baltar) as homicide detectives; along with Tricia Helfer (Number Six) as a necromancer named Morgana.

Ron Moore’s re-imagining of Battlestar Galactica is critically acclaimed with excellent actors who expressed the emotional weight of the premise. It’s exciting that Moore is taking on an original project and bringing actors he’s worked with in the past onboard. And I was a huge fan of James Callis’ Gaius Baltar — I can’t wait to see him in his new role.

The pilot episode of 17th Precinct will air on NBC.

An official picture of Hugo Weaving as the Red Skull in Captain America: The First Avenger recently dropped — what else is there to say? Weaving looks incredible as the Red Skull. He’s more than capable to emote, and especially with the piercing gaze he has in the photo.

Captain America: The First Avenger has strong casting in Chris Evans and Hugo Weaving. I’m very excited for the film, which is out July 22, 2011.
