ultronDirector and writer Joss Whedon shared a glimpse into Marvel’s “Phase 2” bookend at Comic-Con, with voice-overs from the heroes and Iron Man’s helmet being hammered until it formed Ultron, and revealed the title Avengers: Age of Ultron.

It only took moments for speculation to wildly spread that in the film universe, Ultron is inadvertently created by Tony Stark. It fits, considering the events that played out in Iron Man 3. And one of the rumors was that the JARVIS A.I. would become corrupt and villainous.

The JARVIS rumor is still just a rumor, but we can now put an actor to the robot; James Spader was officially cast as Ultron. It’s inspired casting, Spader’s delivery is captivating.

In the comics, Ultron was created by Hank Pym, also known as Ant-Man, but Edgar Wright’s Ant-Man won’t release until “Phase 3”, so that’s off the table. It only furthers the speculation that the teaser wasn’t just using a familiar image, but that Stark is Ultron’s creator.

Where does Thanos fit in this? Well, he doesn’t really. But that’s okay. Thanos is one of the major baddies of Marvel. Having the Avengers face off against him in “Phase 2” would be too early. But there is the possibility that Thanos will make an appearance in Guardians of the Galaxy.

Avengers: Age of Ultron is slated to dominate theaters May 1, 2015.
