Silent Hill 2 moves forward with director Michael J. Bassett spearheading the film. Samuel Hadida and Don Carmody are set to produce. Shooting is planned to begin this winter in Toronto, Canada.

“It’s early days, and I’m keeping details of the plot secret for now, but it’s going to be a sequel to the first film whilst trying to remain true to the plot of game 3, and will also work as a stand-alone movie for people who don’t know the series.”

Bassett also drafted his own screenplay for the film, much to the surprise of everyone who expected Roger Avary — who wrote the first movie — to pen the sequel. Bassett went through the games and researched any material he could get his hands on to gain a good grasp on the mythology. He’s intent on doing the new Silent Hill adaptation justice.

Bassett went on to praise the first Silent Hill movie’s look and atmosphere. And it’s true. The first film perfectly captured the feel of the videogames. Bassett plans to bring back as many of the film’s creative team as possible. I can’t help but agree with that endeavor. The first movie’s atmosphere was engaging and creepy. It made the film memorable despite its flaws in the acting and story.

I’m interested to see what Michael Bassett does with Silent Hill 2. He’s putting a lot of ambition into shooting a movie for the fans and for newcomers alike.
