Marvel’s The Avengers not only ruled the summer box office but became one of the biggest movies ever. And why wouldn’t it be? It was the first time superheroes from different movies came together under one title. It didn’t hurt that the cast was full of charismatic actors who clearly had a lot of chemistry together. Then there’s writer and director Joss Whedon, who spearheaded the project.

Whedon was a natural fit for The Avengers; he’s well-known for writing and directing ensembles. Then, of course, there’s the fact that he has experience writing for Marvel Comics in the past. So it seemed right that Marvel would want Whedon back for the sequel of their biggest success.

It’s now official that Joss Whedon will return to write and direct The Avengers 2, but that isn’t the only news. Marvel and Disney are clearly in love with the man and he will also develop a television series for Marvel.

It’s unclear on which characters the show will focus on, but it’s almost a given that we’ll see some faces who didn’t get an adaptation treatment yet.

And no, it won’t be The Hulk, since that is Guillermo del Toro’s TV project that is still underway.

With at least two shows in the works and Marvel’s collaborative efforts with ABC — who just so happened to be owned by Disney — it’s evident that Marvel Studios is pushing heavily for a presence on television.

And frankly, I’m glad to see Whedon making a return to television without Fox abusing him.
