  • Sony Pictures and Platinum Dunes Adapts Zombies vs. Robots

The rights to the comic Zombies vs. Robots was acquired by Sony Pictures for Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes. The comic is the inspiration and basis for JT Petty’s spec script Inherit the Earth. It centers around a girl who is the sole survivor of the human race. She’s closely guarded by a group of robots from evolved, intelligent zombies.

I like the title Inherit the Earth, but apparently it’s been renamed World War Robot. It isn’t inspired and completely overlooks the zombie aspect of the premise. Reverting to Petty’s title would be a good decision.

Produced by Michael Bay, Brad Fuller, Rick Jacobs, Dave Alpert and Andrew Form — World War Robot is bound to have explosions galore.

  • Oz, The Great and Powerful Casting and News

Sam Raimi’s prequel to the 1939 Wizard of Oz is taking form with actors James Franco and Mila Kunis cast. The name of the film? Oz, The Great and Powerful.

The premise will tell the origins of the Wizard and the witches of Oz. So far there’s been word on the witches of the North, the East and the West — it’s not known if the Good Witch of the South makes an appearance in the new movie (she wasn’t included in the 1939 film).

James Franco is cast in the lead role as the Wizard himself, while Mila Kunis is cast as the Wicked Witch of the West, Theodorah.

Former playwright David Lindsay-Abaire is penning the screenplay for Oz, The Great and Powerful.

Franco and Kunis are a joy to watch onscreen, and it’ll be interesting how Raimi will interpret the story.

  • Second Trailer for Thor is Out

The second trailer for Thor, starring Chris Hemsworth released yesterday. It further displays Thor’s personality; he’s egocentric, demanding, theatrical and — well, he is what you would expect from Thor. Hemsworth shows a lot of potential as the god of thunder. (What a coincidence — I just heard thunder)

Thor is out May 6, 2011.

  • Iron Man 3 Finds its Director in Shane Black

Jon Favreau has stepped down from directing Iron Man 3 to sprearhead Disney’s Magic Kingdom film. So who’s going to wield Robert Downey Jr’s witty charm? Writer and director Shane Black has taken over the director seat for Marvel Studios’ Iron Man 3.

Black and Downey are no strangers to each other — Black co-write and directed the movie Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, which helped restart Downey’s acting career. And let’s face it: the snappy and witty dialogue in that film is a perfect fit for the persona of Tony Stark.

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang was a thoroughly entertaining film, though it hasn’t showcased the grand action scenes that Iron Man will call for. But who knows? Marvel Studios has been taking chances since the first Iron Man, and they have yet to disappoint.

Robert Downey Jr. is the embodiment of Tony Stark, but if Marvel Studios lets Shane Black co-write as well, then Iron Man 3 has a huge chance to topple over the first film.

Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World) joins Timur Bekmambetov’s film adaptation of Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. Winstead will play Mary Todd; co-starring with Benjamin Walker, who will portray Abraham Lincoln.

Winstead was entertaining in prior roles — especially in Scott Pilgrim and Sky High — she’ll be a great addition to the cast of Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter.

  • Battlestar‘s Tahmoh Penikett Joins Mortal Kombat: Rebirth

Web series Mortal Kombat: Rebirth gained a new addition to its cast: Tahmoh Penikett. The actor is most notable for his role as Helo on the critically acclaimed series Battlestar Galactica. Penikett will portray police officer Kurtis Stryker, who weilds nightsticks and tasers. Stryker was a leader of the Riot Control Birgade during Outworld’s invasion.

Michael Jai White’s involvement was enough to make the online series badass, but the inclusion of Penikett amplifies it. He was captivating as the headstrong Helo in Battlestar, which will fit perfectly in his role as Kurtis Stryker.
