‘Street Fighter’ Remake Fun

The original Street Fighter movie was a lot of fun. It didn’t take itself seriously, had entertaining fight scenes, and a lot of memorable lines. And by a lot, I mean a lot. So going into the remake, I was already hoping for some ridiculous fun and good fight scenes — and that is exactly what we got. And what added to it, was that it took inspiration from the video games, the original film, and the Street Fighter II anime. All of the callbacks and references work.

Street Fighter knew exactly what it was and it was unapologetic. It grabbed inspiration from previous works and made it its own thing. It was very 1990s and it is stronger for it. The film also took the male gaze and shaped it into the pansexual gaze, because the camera was lovingly grazing the bodies of every gender. That leads into the cinematography, which felt perfect. The fun fight scenes were well-shot, the punches and kicks were dynamic and the camera angles made sure the impacts are felt.

It was clear that every actor was having a great time; everybody had memorable lines that get you laughing, and everyone had a badass moment beating the crap out of another fighter. And most notably, the actors who played Ryu and Ken did a fantastic job playing it very believable that they’re foster brothers who constantly get on each other’s nerves but ultimately love each other.

I sincerely hope we get more Street Fighter, because it was a damn good time, and I want to see more of these characters interacting, having fun, and beating the crap out of each other.

Perfect.
