‘Where the Wild Things Are’: A Retrospective

My dad had a children’s book that he passed down to me which left a lasting impact on me. Where the Wild Things Are, by Maurice Sendak addressed the loneliness, a creative spirit, and a sense of belonging. Maybe a lot of it is implied and I projected, but regardless, it was comforting.

The movie released in 2009 directed by Spike Jonze reaffirmed my feelings towards the children’s book. I vividly remember seeing the trailer for the first time, and all the complicated feelings came forth, and I felt emotionally overwhelmed. I remember I sent the trailer to a friend and told him, “Are you ready to watch me ugly cry in a movie theater?”

Suffice to say, the film was both equally heartwarming and heart wrenching at the same time. Anyone with a heart would feel the same way. If it’s been a while, I would implore you to watch it again. It’s good and it’s healthy to let those feelings out. After all, aren’t we all wild?
