In a way, Prometheus and Alien: Covenant are its own thing in the Alien movies, since it mainly centers around an android named David, rather then having the focal point being the aliens themselves. It’s almost a character study with a horrific backdrop of monstrous aliens — well, David himself is pretty monstrous too, with his amoral curiosity.
I really, really enjoyed Prometheus, especially with watching David doing day-to-day tasks and the slow descent into amoral chaos. The cinematography was captivating, and the score was memorable. It almost felt like an old school space movie with horror undertones that slowly come to the forefront.
Alien: Covenant on the other hand, I didn’t like when I saw it in theaters years ago. I liked the aesthetic of Prometheus, so I was disappointed that Covenant went with a darker look that matches more with the Alien films. I rewatched it last year and I came around on it — I liked it. David continued being a freaky amoral scientist, an antagonist whose curiosity continues to terrorize all around him.
Despite all this, I wasn’t sure how I felt about a third movie being announced. It almost didn’t feel necessary, especially since there have been more Alien movies and TV shows. Then news that Aaron Guzikowski will join to write the third film came out. Suddenly, a third movie felt very necessary. Guzikowski was the creator of the HBO show Raised by Wolves, a series that I hold very highly. It centered around two androids who raise human children on a distant planet, and their opposing ways of parenthood. It was both fascinating and hilarious seeing them have petty arguments. And the show still remains one of the weirdest shows I have ever seen. I’m also still incredibly upset that it was cancelled after two seasons. It deserved a full life.
Now you can see why I’m suddenly fully onboard. Also, if you haven’t seen Raised by Wolves, do yourself a favor and watch it. All of it. I love that weird as hell show.
