Apple TV’s ‘Monarch: Legacy of Monsters’ Brings in New Writers

One of the first — by which I mean the first show — that I watched on Apple TV once I got it and paid attention after all the F1 on the F1 app, was Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. As someone who grew up on Godzilla and Kurt Russell, it was obvious that I had to watch. And we didn’t just get one Russell, we also got Kurt’s son, Wyatt Russell. It wasn’t their first time playing the same character at different points in the character’s life — that accolade belongs to Soldier, but it is their first time playing the same character in a TV show.

Side note: how did they swing getting both Russells for a TV series?

The show centers on the formation of Monarch, started by two scientist and a soldier to find and study big monsters known as titans, many decades ago, all the way to the present. Godzilla, of course, is the catalyst for it all.

The series is fun, dramatic, with charismatic characters; where the titans almost serve as a backdrop for the story, and it just works. I really don’t want to explain farther in fear of spoiling things. You. Should. Watch.

The second season of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters concluded earlier this year, and for the third season, they’re ready to take things in a new direction. Which means they are now in search of new writers and a new showrunner, to search for new titans.

Granted, they could go either way: the show becoming drastically different and doesn’t work as well, or finding a good balance to bring the show in an exciting direction. The actors can clearly carry things with their chemistry and great hair, but good writing is what will elevate it. I’m on the side of optimism, as someone who really, really enjoyed the TV show.
