Back in 1999 as a child, I had a gaming console that was the epitome of gaming consoles to me, but unfortunately I was in the minority of that opinion. Which is too bad, because I still think Sega Dreamcast was the greatest and everything went downhill after Sega broke my little gaming heart when they discontinued the system, and my gaming days became sparse and casual. A lot of Dreamcast games were fun and borderline whimsical, which made them charming. Like the game Crazy Taxi, where you play as a cab driver going against a clock to pick up and drop off people as quick as possible; no matter how many laws you have to break or lives you put in danger to make it happen.
Crazy Taxi was one of the games I think of when I fondly reminisce on Sega Dreamcast. That game easily and quickly became chaotic and it was incredibly fun because of that.
So, as it turns out, Crazy Taxi is making the leap to film, with Netflix getting the rights for a film adaptation. Seems silly, but it also turns out that the screenwriters working on it have previously wrote the 2025 reboot of The Naked Gun, which was well-received. So if anything, it’s in safe hands that know to lean into the whimsy and ridiculous. My fingers are crossed that it doesn’t get stuck in developmental hell and completes that fare.
Oh, and it also turns out that Crazy Taxi is also getting another game. Crazy Taxi: World Tour is set to release next year on all gaming systems.
