People who know me know I have a distaste for AI. Granted, I think it’s a very useful tool if used as such, but I’m a huge hater when uncreative, unartistic people use it to generate any form of art. Art is an expression of the human condition; writing prompts for an AI to scrape and cobble together from others’ art is not creative or expressive. So of course Spotify being a tech company, wanted to feel artsy and add an “About the Song” AI.
The way the AI even explained things strips away the creativity into some surface level, emotionless explanation. It’s like some random dude mansplaining.
Part of Spotify’s statement definitely got a laugh out of me: “The info comes from articles across the internet […]” It made me think of how I looked at analytics for this very blog and saw how ChatGPT had used it as a source to give a stranger information as if my little website is a reliable and vetted source.
I would say Spotify should stay in their lane and provide an avenue to present music to listeners, but they’ve already been flooding their library with AI generated music. Only tech bros love that nonsense.
