When word first came out that the sequel to X-Men: First Class is entitled X-Men: Days of Future Past, comic fans were quick to speculate that it’ll be heavily influenced by the graphic novel of the same name. Although, the cast of characters are quite different.

Marvel’s own Mark Millar is the creative consultant for 20th Century Fox; and he recently shined some light on the sequel, saying it’s “X-Men meets The Terminator“. The movie will lean more towards sci-fi with its premise.

“You’ve got robots, you’ve got time travel, you’ve got superheroes — it’s got everything in one film…”

–Mark Millar to SFX

And there we have it: official news that the new movie will be based on the comic’s story arc. Unlike the previous films, this time we can expect sentinels not only making an appearance, but playing a huge role against the X-Men.

At this point, this incarnation of the X-Men is more detached from the prequels with its cast of characters. The only consistent part is Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine — but if any part should stay the same in the movies, it’s Hugh Jackman.

Wolverine has a huge part in the graphic novel, but it’s just speculation that he will appear in the sequel. Sure, there was a cameo in X-Men: First Class, but Fox developed a separate franchise with the character, which is currently filming.

Anyways! To get off that tangent — I’m glad to hear that the sequel really is following the storyline from the graphic novel; it was fun to read — not to mention, the animated series’ adaptation was also a blast.

X-Men: Days of Future Past hits theaters July 18, 2014.
