The trailer for director Bryan Singer’s X-Men: Days of Future Past is out. It clearly shows how the plot to the First Class sequel bridges the gap to Singer’s X-Men movies.

I haven’t held back my reservations about Singer bringing his cast back into the mix; it gave me the impression that it’d become a cameo-fest that would take away from the story. The trailer makes me cautiously optimistic.

I warmed up to the idea of Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine being sent back in time instead of Ellen Page’s Kitty Pryde. In the basic premise, it’s the consciousness that’s sent back into the younger self. In the comics, the person sent back was Kitty — can’t really do that in the films since she’s significantly younger. Wolverine though, is practically ageless thanks to his mutation. So it makes sense.

The film stars — oh, you can see who, in the trailer!

X-Men: Days of Future Past opens in theaters May 23, 2014.
