Fairytale Adapted as Jack the Giant Killer
More fairytale news comes along, this time with Jack and the Beanstalk. New Line’s retelling of the story is entitled Jack the Giant Killer. Bryan Singer will direct the film.The story of Jack and the Beanstalk? A farmboy named Jack leads a group of people to free a princess who’s kidnapped by a giant. This of course threatens the uneasy peace between giants and humans.
For casting, Nicholas Hoult will portray the peasant, Stanley Tucci as the villainous advisor of the king, and Bill Nighy and John Kassir will play the two-headed giant leader. Ewan McGregor is under negotiations to portray the leader of the king’s guards, who spearheads the fight against giants. The role of the princess hasn’t been cast yet.
Filming for Jack the Giant Killer is slated for late March in London.

James Franco Official Rise of the Apes Photo
The workaholic actor James Franco is a busy man who is apparently starring in several upcoming films, one of which is Rise of the Apes, a prequel to Planet of the Apes. JoBlo released an official photo featuring Franco as the main character Will Rodman.Rodman is a scientist who makes a breakthrough while researching the development of intelligence in an ape test subject. The ape’s name? Caesar. Yes, the same ape who led a war against humankind. Andy Serkis will portray Caesar via motion-capturing.
James Franco has the acting chops as a lead actor, as evident by his recent film 127 Hours. And I must admit that Rise of the Apes is beginning to pique my interest. It releases this November.

Peter Stormare Joins Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters
Joining Jeremy Renner, Gemma Arterton and Famke Janssen in Paramount’s and MGM’s Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters is actor Peter Stormare. He will portray the antagonistic town sheriff Berringer.Stormare is known for his performances in Fargo as one of the kidnappers, as John Abruzzi in the television series Prison Break, and as Lucifer in Constantine — not to mention the Russian Cosmonaut Lev Andropov in Armageddon.
Stormare is charismatic and is a great addition to the cast of Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters. And he will probably steal the scene too.

New Sucker Punch Trailer Hits
The third trailer for Zack Snyder’s Sucker Punch released, and it’s visually stunning. There’s a heavy fantasy element, which is a welcome change after a series of realistic movies. There’s guns, swords, Nazi, samurai, zeppelins, fighter planes, robots and dragons — just to name a few.There’s a definite anime influence, and it reminds me even more of Casshern. Though Casshern had parts that lagged, its look was gorgeous. Snyder has a better grasp on pacing, so Sucker Punch is bound to be an aesthetically pleasing rollercoaster.
Sucker Punch hits theaters March 25, 2011.

Sony Pictures and Platinum Dunes Adapts Zombies vs. Robots
The rights to the comic Zombies vs. Robots was acquired by Sony Pictures for Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes. The comic is the inspiration and basis for JT Petty’s spec script Inherit the Earth. It centers around a girl who is the sole survivor of the human race. She’s closely guarded by a group of robots from evolved, intelligent zombies.I like the title Inherit the Earth, but apparently it’s been renamed World War Robot. It isn’t inspired and completely overlooks the zombie aspect of the premise. Reverting to Petty’s title would be a good decision.
Produced by Michael Bay, Brad Fuller, Rick Jacobs, Dave Alpert and Andrew Form — World War Robot is bound to have explosions galore.

Oz, The Great and Powerful Casting and News
Sam Raimi’s prequel to the 1939 Wizard of Oz is taking form with actors James Franco and Mila Kunis cast. The name of the film? Oz, The Great and Powerful.The premise will tell the origins of the Wizard and the witches of Oz. So far there’s been word on the witches of the North, the East and the West — it’s not known if the Good Witch of the South makes an appearance in the new movie (she wasn’t included in the 1939 film).
James Franco is cast in the lead role as the Wizard himself, while Mila Kunis is cast as the Wicked Witch of the West, Theodorah.
Former playwright David Lindsay-Abaire is penning the screenplay for Oz, The Great and Powerful.
Franco and Kunis are a joy to watch onscreen, and it’ll be interesting how Raimi will interpret the story.
