  • Mortal Kombat: Rebirth News

Remember the Mortal Kombat short that hit YouTube last year? All the interest generated propelled it forward with continued production as a live-action online series.

Michael Jai White (Spawn) reprises his role as Jax Briggs; as well as Jeri Ryan (Star Trek: Voyager) as Sonya Blade. Darren Shahlavi of 300 joins the cast as criminal Kano.

Written by Kevin Tancharoen, Todd Helbing and Aaron Helbing, Mortal Kombat: Rebirth releases online this spring by Warner Bros.; Tancharoen also directs and produces the online series.

“It’s extremely gratifying to have such talented actors playing these iconic roles. They will bring the essence of Mortal Kombat to life and gamers will be deeply immersed into the game’s universe.”

    — Kevin Tancharoen

The online series is an anthology of shorts to provide insight into each character that are in the upcoming game — yes, there’s a game coming out as well, which will release on April 19th, 2011 — which you can pre-order HERE.

  • Michael Rosenbaum Reprises Lex Luthor for Smallville

The news still keeps pouring in despite Smallville approaching its swan song. After all the speculation, the producers have come forward with news that Michael Rosenbaum will make a final return as Lex Luthor for the series finale.

“It feels like the stars are aligning, literally. We couldn’t be more excited about having Michael back. And as far as the way he returns … there’ll be no doubt about how Lex becomes the great rival in Clark Kent’s life. He is the villain of the story.”

    — Executive producers and showrunners Brian Peterson and Kelly Souders

“I’m simply doing it for all of the fans out there who made Smallville the great success it is. I appreciate all of their passion, their relentlessness and even their threats (laughs). I can’t wait to hug the old crew back in Vancouver one last time and see all of my old friends once again….. Oh, and for Lex to become the badass he’s destined to be.”

    — Michael Rosenbaum

It’s incredibly exciting that Rosenbaum is reprising his role as Lex Luthor after a three-year absence. It’s clearly looking like the show will be getting the sendoff it deserves, with both its protagonist and antagonist at odds once again.

The series finale for Smallville is on May 13, 2011 — don’t miss out.

  • Official ThunderCats Photo Hits the Net

Warner Bros. released an official ThunderCats photo, which captures the original feel while updating the look.

The new animated series intends to appeal to both old fans and newcomers to the cartoon. And not just that, but take the old, loosely connected plots and weave them together to make a more cohesive premise.

The debut for the new ThunderCats series is still unknown, but it will air on Cartoon Network.

Does this mean my ThunderCats belt buckle won’t be retro anymore?

  • 3 Smallville Actors Make a Return

Smallville is on its tenth and final season with its conclusion fast approaching. And what’s in store for the February 4th episode? The return of Lionel Luthor (John Glover), Martha Kent (Anette O’Toole) and Chloe (Allison Mack).

The premise the CW released? (Spoiler Alert):

Clark (Tom Welling) is surprised to see Martha (Annette O’Toole) on the news speaking at a pro-vigilante rally. However, surprise quickly turns to horror when he and Lois (Erica Durance) watch as Martha gets shot on national television.

Meanwhile, Lionel (John Glover) reveals himself to the world and reclaims LuthorCorp from Tess (Cassidy Freeman) and Oliver (Justin Hartley). Lois and Chloe (Allison Mack) decide to cheer Clark up by showing him videos from thousands of vigilante supporters professing their support for The Blur. Videos were created and submitted by actual “Smallville” fans. Mike Rohl directed the episode written by Don Whitehead & Holly Henderson.

It’s great that a few old cast members are reprising their roles for the final season of Smallville, but we’re all still hoping for a Lex Luthor (Michael Rosenbaum) return. It only makes sense for all the key players to make a last appearance in the show’s final run.

  • Mobile Game Angry Birds Becomes an Animated Series

The immensely popular mobile game Angry Birds will become an animated series. Creators of the game, Finnish company Rovio will produce. It’s unclear if it will be a web series or TV series.

“We have been looking at that for quite a while, and that is definitely one of my personal big focus areas right now — to work on broadcast content for Angry Birds.”

    — Mikael Hed, CEO of Rovio

Really? I was going to make fun of it, but then I remembered the Sonic the Hedgehog cartoons from my childhood — so I concede. Though it doesn’t change the fact that it’s utterly ridiculous.

  • Liam Neeson Returns to Star Wars

Cartoon Network’s Star Wars: The Clone Wars has quite the casting news: actor Liam Neeson reprises his role as Qui-Gon Jinn. The late Jedi Master will appear to Obi-Wan Kenobi in visions, in a three-part story arc.

“These characters resonate…even after all these years. Growing up, my heroes were cowboys; they were strong and mysterious, and it seemed like they always rode off into the sunset. For kids today, Star Wars has that same kind of magic. I really wanted to be a part of that.”

    — Liam Neeson

Let’s face it: Neeson was one of the only good things about The Phantom Menace — so putting him in the superior Clone Wars works perfectly.

You can view Entertainment Weekly’s exclusive video HERE.

The first episode with Qui-Gon will air January 28, 2011.

  • Steven Spielberg’s TV Series Falling Skies

Steven Spielberg teams with Dreamworks Television to bring the new post-apocalyptic action TV series Falling Skies. Noah Wyle of ER stars.

    The official synopsis you ask?

Falling Skies is an exciting new series from DreamWorks Television and executive producer Steven Spielberg. Noah Wyle (ER, TNT’s The Librarian movies) stars as a former college professor who becomes the leader of a group of soldiers and civilians struggling against an occupying alien force. Moon Bloodgood (Terminator Salvation) co-stars as Anne Glass, a therapist who works with the surviving children to help them cope with the traumatic situation. The series also stars Drew Roy (Lincoln Heights) as Hal and Maxim Knight (Brothers & Sisters) as Matt, Tom’s two sons; and Seychelle Gabriel (Weeds) as Lourdes, an orphaned teenager who helps run the group’s commissary. Will Patton (Armageddon, TNT’s Into the West) will play a recurring role as a fierce resistance fighter.

Falling Skies will be on TNT in June.

  • Tron: Uprising Animated Series Update

Disney pushes forward with its animated series Tron: Uprising. The show begins in the summer of 2012, with a voice cast comprising of Bruce Boxleitner, Elijah Wood, Mandy Moore, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Paul Reubens, Lance Henriksen and Nate Corddry.

Wood stars as the character named Beck, who leads an uprising in the Grid. Joining him will be Boxleitner reprising his role as Tron.

The series will take place between the time CLU takes over the Grid to when Sam enters to look for his father.

At first the timeline is surprising; with the thought that time between the original Tron and the second film would make sense for a series, but time in the Grid is different than the real world. There’s a lot to cover between CLU’s take over and Sam’s entry into the Grid.

Adam Horowitz, the co-screenwriter of Tron: Legacy and consulting producer for the series had this to say:

“Our intention is to try and make something that is more than just, let’s go get something. We treat TRON very, very seriously and as writers we try to have a reason and a world for everything and not all of it gets to be shown because in this particular movie, we only had two hours. [fusion_builder_container hundred_percent=”yes” overflow=”visible”][fusion_builder_row][fusion_builder_column type=”1_1″ background_position=”left top” background_color=”” border_size=”” border_color=”” border_style=”solid” spacing=”yes” background_image=”” background_repeat=”no-repeat” padding=”” margin_top=”0px” margin_bottom=”0px” class=”” id=”” animation_type=”” animation_speed=”0.3″ animation_direction=”left” hide_on_mobile=”no” center_content=”no” min_height=”none”][So] hopefully it fills in the blanks in and in a fun way and an intriguing way.”

There’s massive potential in Tron: Uprising in its stellar cast and crew. After all, even Charlie Bean of Powerpuff Girls and Samurai Jack is involved.
