  • Trailer for Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides Released Online

What’s this? Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides trailer? The fourth film seems to tone down from the epic mess that was At World’s End. Hopefully it’ll be just as fun as the first movie.

  • Guillermo del Toro Opens Production Company Mirada

Guillermo del Toro spearheads a production company named Mirada with Mathew Cullen, Guillermo Navarro and Javier Jimenez. It’s based out of a 25,000-square-foot studio in Marina del Rey, California; the same studio where key sequences from Blade Runner filmed.

Mirada encompasses a sound stage, animation, post and visual effects, an art department and a full camera shop.

“I hate to use this word, but it’s a boutique operation. We want to attract filmmakers and help them develop their ideas from the ground up. Not in a pipeline of production and not with a marketing view, but simply, how to build a story the best. That could be a short film, a feature film, a commercial, proof of concept — whatever it may be, you get all of us.”

    -Guillermo del Toro to TheWrap.

Mirada is great news for filmmakers, and it’s a huge but smart endeavor for del Toro and co. They will help streamline and cultivate filmmaking; Mirada will make resources easier for filmmakers.

“Mirada is not a studio operation, but hopefully it will be a place where filmmakers come to interact with other filmmakers and create ideas.”

    -Guillermo del Toro

Guillermo del Toro always struck me as a passionate and earnest filmmaker, and this further proves that.

  • Official Thor Trailer is Out

The official Thor trailer is out. A lot of effects are cleaned up from the trailer I saw at Comic-Con. I’m really stoked for Thor. May 6th cannot come soon enough.

  • Sam Neill in J.J. Abram’s Alcatraz

J.J. Abram’s new show Alcatraz moves forward with casting news: Sam Neill (Jurassic Park) is cast in a starring role. He’ll be joining Jorge Garcia (Lost) and Jonny Coyne, along with star Sarah Jones and Jason Butler Harner, who will be in a supporting role.

FBI agents are tracking down missing prisoners of Alcatraz, with Jones as a cop, and Neill as the head of a government agency.

Alcatraz piqued my interest when J.J. Abrams became producer, and more after Garcia being cast. I’m curious to see how Garcia’s new character portrayal will be as opposed to his role as Hugo on Lost.

With Sam Neill involved, it secures my interest in the upcoming pilot episode.

  • Chris Zylka Joins Spider-Man Cast

The role of Flash Thompson in Marc Webb’s Spider-Man goes to Chris Zylka. A high school football player, Thompson is a classmate and bully of Peter Parker. He ironically admires Spider-Man, which amuses Parker.

Chris Zylka joins the cast consisting of Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Martin Sheen, Sally Field, Denis Leary, Campbell Scott, Rhys Ifans, Irrfan Khan, Julianne Nicholson, and Annie Parisse.

  • Thor Poster Hits the Net

The official poster for Marvel’s film Thor recently hit the net. The poster definitely gives off a Shakespeare vibe, which was probably influenced by director Kenneth Branagh — who isn’t a stranger to Shakespeare.

Anyone else excited to see the god of thunder on the big screen?

  • Hugh Jackman in Real Steel

Directed by Shawn Levy is action drama film Real Steel starring Hugh Jackman. The synopsis?

Hugh Jackman plays Charlie Kenton, a washed-up fighter who lost his chance at a title when 2000-pound, 8-foot-tall steel robots took over the ring. Now nothing but a small-time promoter, Charlie earns just enough money piecing together low-end bots from scrap metal to get from one underground boxing venue to the next. When Charlie hits rock bottom, he reluctantly teams up with his estranged son Max (Dakota Goyo) to build and train a championship contender. As the stakes in the brutal, no-holds-barred arena are raised, Charlie and Max, against all odds, get one last shot at a comeback.

The trailer for Real Steel released today, and I can’t help but think of it as a scaled down version of the 1990’s film Robot Jox. Despite the similarities of robots battling, the movie is inspired by the short story and episode of The Twilight Zone written by Richard Matheson.

  • Transformers: Dark of the Moon Teaser is Out

Michael Bay’s third Transformers film is underway, and entitled Transformers: Dark of the Moon. Shia LaBeouf once again reprises his starring role as Sam Witwicky. Returning cast members are Tyrese Gibson, Josh Duhamel, John Turturro, and Ramon Rodriguez. Peter Cullen returns as the voice of Optimus Prime, with Hugo Weaving again voicing Megatron. Newcomer Rosie Huntington-Whiteley joins the cast as Sam’s love interest Carly.

Transformers: Dark of the Moon will be in 3D, utilizing the 3D cameras used in Avatar. Hopefully this means the action shots will pull back so the viewer can clearly see what’s going on.

The teaser trailer came out today; and it’s speculation that the transformer displayed in it is Alpha Trion, one of the original thirteen transformers.

Transformers: Dark of the Moon opens July 1, 2011.
