Okay, okay. I’ll admit it. At first I was kind of a hater on the new Mortal Kombat that’s coming out soon. The previous one was enjoyable, but it felt a little weird and not in a good way. Having the star of the film portray an original character instead of one of the plethora of characters he could have played was a choice. That choice felt even more weird when said star, Lewis Tan, basically played Johnny Cage in Cobra Kai. So I became bitter when Karl Urban was cast as Johnny Cage for Mortal Kombat II, rather than retroactively fixing the first by recasting Tan as Johnny.
Don’t get me wrong, I do think Karl Urban is a fantastic actor.
Despite my feelings, the trailer that was just released piqued my excitement immensely. It perfectly captures the feel of Mortal Kombat. It’s tongue-in-cheek, it’s violent, and it’s displaying fighters’ powers in abundance. And what more we saw of Karl Urban as an older Johnny Cage has won me over.
The only improvement at this point for Mortal Kombat II would be throwing us a swerve and Lewis Tan’s character becoming one of the legitimate Mortal Kombat characters.
The film releases in theaters May 8th.
