A Word on ‘Surf Ninjas’

Or more like multiple words.

I was a mere child and was getting back into martial arts around the time that Surf Ninjas was releasing in theaters. I was already a fan of Ernie Reyes Jr thanks to his role in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze. I was clearly destined to be very excited to see Reyes starring in a martial arts comedy.

Oh, and a side note: I didn’t know as a kid, but Ernie Reyes Jr was also involved in the first Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, as a stunt double for Donatello, performing the fight scenes.

The basic premise for Surf Ninjas took two goofball brothers who surf, and throw them into the destinies they never knew they had, which obviously includes an inherent skill in martial arts that manifests as danger progresses. They learn their ancestral background from their uncle, who coincidentally is actually Ernie Reyes Jr’s real life father, Ernie Reyes Sr, who is also a martial artist in real life.

It’s a fun martial arts comedy mostly geared towards children, and the fight scenes are stellar, with the Reyes family doing the heavy lifting. If you haven’t already seen it, you really should. Luckily, if you have Amazon Prime, you can watch it there.

“I think it means ‘free beer’”, has lived rent free in my head for decades.
