Comic-Con: An Evening with Kevin Smith

Many years ago, I fought valiantly in the hot, summer sun for a coveted seat in Hall H on a Saturday. Marvel Studios was in full swing being a main event at Comic-Con. The heat was nearly too much, and I barely made it into Hall H just as Marvel started their panel. I didn’t make it. I was stuck in line near the front until Marvel’s panel ended. But spending hours in the heat meant I was stubborn and still wanted to get into Hall H. I wanted a nice, cool, dark room to relax in. And thus, I had my first experience at a Kevin Smith panel.

Most panels at Hall H during Comic-Con have a film or television series to show off and answer questions about. For Kevin Smith, it was not like that; it was more of a conversation between him and the audience; telling random stories. And it was here that I found out firsthand that he is a fantastic storyteller. He would take questions from the audience, and answer it wit ha story that was both insightful and made you laugh.

Fast forward to now, and I went into Hall H with the full intention to sit back and listen to Kevin Smith’s stories for his 30th year at Comic-Con. He shared stories about first meeting Stan Lee; working with him; and developing a friendship with him. Then, there were hysterical stories about random towns he stayed in that led to jokes that went online, and the backlash from weirdos over them. Oh, and not being able to help himself from excitedly talking about projects he’s involved in that hasn’t been officially announced yet.

Per usual, Kevin Smith’s panel was really, really fun. The casual style, the back and forth banter, all gave it an intimate feel despite taking place in the huge Hall H room. You would do yourself a disservice not attending at least one of Keven Smith’s panels at Comic-Con.
